UTC Scarborough were looking to upgrade and refurb their Sixth Form College department, which occupies the top floor of the building. This involved moving the main study area into a bright open working space in the centre of the floor area and investing in brand new clean white desk study units and powerful new PCs capable of handling the department CAD software. In order to bring the whole area together visually, adverset were asked to come up with an internal décor solution, which would also incorporate the existing Sixth Form College branding.
Background
In order to bring the whole area together visually, adverset were asked to come up with an internal décor solution, which would also incorporate the existing Sixth Form College branding.
After inspecting the site and taking a full brief on the plans for the area, our recommendation was to design and produce a series of graphical wallcoverings, encompassing and extending around the walls in each classroom entrance door opening. In order to encircle the whole Sixth Form area, it was suggested that we also cover the opposite wall nibs with a matching design and in addition represent the brand on each stairwell wall leading to the floor.
The challenge
With wall space limited, our task was to create visuals that were bright and engaging to make best use of this space, resulting in a ‘mural’ style approach. The graphic style we created is contemporary and illustrative, using elements that are designed to sum up the values and experiences of Scarborough UTC life. Although this obviously means that the subjects are technical in nature, the overall effect is complemented by a playful accent , which we felt would be something that students should be comfortable around.
Solution
In order to incorporate the values, aspirations and existing college’s branding, the graphics were based around four key illustrations situated in each of the main side panels, the subject matter of which was taken from imagery in the current Sixth Form prospectus. To add continuity with current promotional material, we also incorporated the ‘data lines’ used throughout the current prospectus as textures in the background. The colourways were taken from the waves in the SUTC logo. The final graphics use the purple and magenta as the background colour for one area, with the yellow and turquoise providing accents. For the other area, the colours are reversed with the overall main colour being yellow/turquoise and this ensured a contrast between both rooms. For the stairwells we have created a graphic based around the ‘6th Form’ title to serve as an intro to the sixth form landing and act as a distillation of the graphics in the main room. This was produced as cut vinyl applied to the wall.
Results
The Principal was delighted with the initial designs and once approved, we suggested self-adhesive repositionable wallcovering as the most practical material to use.
The wallcoverings were printed on an HP360 Latex machine, using environmentally friendly inks.
The displays and wallcoverings were all fitted in less than two days, in time for the UTC Open Day on Thursday 12 March, completing the facelift.
We are very grateful to the staff at UTC Scarborough for providing seamless access and assistance during the fitting process, to enable us to meet this important deadline.
Our digitally printed, self-adhesive vinyl graphics are removable and repositionable and come with free fitting. A great choice for the complete transformation of interior areas, from offices, commercial and institutional premises to even house interiors.
